Spiritual battle is very important these days - for the Church is being attacked from a variety of aspects, from several different sources, and from many regions that we have not taken into account before.
The "spirit of religion" is a term that is used often nowadays in the body of Christ. Regularly used in your more "grace-centered" churches, the phrase is usually spoken to point-out an act of legalistic or judgmental areas. Every time a person starts to basis their judgments or their activities around a handful of traditions and man made requirements, they are generally accused of possessing a spirit of religion that is certainly in their life.
The unfortunate truth is that legalism is quite real and it does indeed real harm! The well-intentioned believer can easily still instantly fall prey to the spirit of religion and bring harm to them-selves not to mention other folks. It may be literally a spirit (an unholy spirit) doing work through a person, and yet this is often basically a poor mindset dependent on many years of inappropriate guidance.
Start up Christian programming and you might find the legalistic preacher bring condemnation and disgrace to the people who are still attempting to grow in Christ, and you will in addition see the other ministers, preaching against the legalistic preachers! We are heading against each other and this needs to stop!
As a result, does the spirit of religion stop with the legalistic Christian? Certainly not. As a matter of fact, increasingly more we are experiencing the spirit of religion both assault and affect Christians with a spirit of "elitism" - An "air" about them that produces them to truly think they are part of some first-class club of revelatory experts! As they receive revelation in a part of the expression of God, they become puffed-up and come to feel superior to those without the same revelation.
You might have been given revelation on healing, miracles, eschatology, grace, or some other area. I pray you do receive revelation and heavenly downloads - yet we need to always remember that most of us see in part and hear in part. We would not have the full visualize or revelation - and just what we are given is simply because God has selected to expose it to us. Honour and cherish the revelations that the Lord blesses you with, but in no way let it puff-up, enabling the spirit of religion to have root in everyday life.
We see the spirit of religion in two completely different areas - one is the camp of legalism, adding to the word of God so that you can control others. Another area is elitism, bringing people up to a spot in which they look down upon others in the body of Christ. People are all growing and getting transformed from glory-to-glory (2 Cor. 3:18) - so may we grow in brotherly love not division.
What is the secret? Stay definitively humble and happy for the change of God. Choose to stay in communion with Christ - stay in the secret place with God and permit your experiences to help you grow. Never ever allow the spirit of religion to develop in your life. Admire others and God as you witness the amazing things of God transform you from glory-to-glory. Inspect yourselves repeatedly, and study the way you treat others. Stay in love and inspect God bring extra revelation to your life!
